Dokkum
Places to go
The centre of the fortified city is characterized by canals and stepped gables. The impressive architecture of the city hall dates back from the 17th, 18th and 19th century. The doors are open for visitors. Also worth a visit are the corn mill 'Zeldenrust' and the mill 'de Hoop'. Don’t forget to visit the 'Bonifatiusbron' (well of missionary Bonifatius).
According to the legend the well was discovered and blessed by Bonifatius, who was killed in Dokkum in ‘754. The water of the well was sweet, while the water in the surroundings was salty and bitter! People say his ghost still wanders around and gives the well healing powers. You can also discover Dokkum from the water. Experience Dokkum!
