The ‘Afsluitdijk’

The dike is a special piece of Dutch hydraulic engineering. It is internationally well-known and the subject of many beautiful memories.

The Afsluitdijk is the brainchild of engineer Cornelis Lely, although engineer Simon Steven already had plans in the 17th century to control the treacherous Zuider Zee by building a dike between Friesland and the province Noord Holland. For a period of twelve years, under miserable circumstances, people worked on this dike resulting in its completion on 28 May 1932. The birth of the IJsselmeer becoming a fact. An example of a small country as The Netherlands achieving big things . A dike to be proud off!
